Types of Water Tube Boiler: A Comprehensive Guide to Industrial Steam Solutions

May 20, 2026

Part 1: What Is a Water Tube Boiler?

A water tube boiler is a type of steam generator in which water flows inside the tubes while high-temperature flue gas passes across the tube exteriors to transfer heat. This design fundamentally differs from fire tube boilers, where hot gas travels inside the tubes. Because water circulates through tubes that are directly exposed to radiant and convective heat, water tube boilers achieve higher thermal efficiency, withstand greater operating pressures, and deliver larger steam outputs than their fire tube counterparts.

The core advantages of water tube technology include faster steam generation due to reduced water volume, superior safety under high-pressure conditions, and flexible capacity scaling from small industrial units to utility-scale power plant boilers. Membrane water walls further enhance efficiency by sealing the furnace and minimizing heat loss.

Understanding the various types of water tube boiler is essential for engineers and plant managers evaluating steam systems. Among the different types of water tube boiler, D-type and double-drum designs dominate the industrial market due to their proven performance under demanding conditions. These boilers have become the preferred choice across power generation, chemical processing, textile manufacturing, food production, and district heating, where reliability, efficiency, and output volume are non-negotiable. When comparing types of water tube boiler, engineers consistently prioritize designs that balance thermal performance with long-term operating costs.

Part 2: Types of Water Tube Boiler by Fuel

ZOZEN Boiler offers a comprehensive range of water tube boilers across three major fuel categories. Each of these types of water tube boiler is engineered with distinct structural designs to match specific industrial requirements, each engineered with distinct structural designs to match specific industrial requirements.

Gas and Oil Fired Water Tube Boilers

SZS Series Gas-Fired (Oil-Fired) Steam Boiler

Built around a double-drum, longitudinal D-type chamber structure, the SZS series is ZOZEN’s flagship among the types of water tube boiler designed for gas and oil combustion. The furnace is fully enclosed by membrane water-cooled walls, maximizing radiant heat absorption. With a capacity range of 2–110 t/h, working pressures from 1.25 to 5.3 MPa, and steam temperatures up to 540°C, the SZS series delivers thermal efficiency exceeding 98% when paired with an economizer and condenser. NOx emissions are controlled to ≤30 mg/Nm³. This series is widely deployed in chemical plants, food processing facilities, textile mills, and hospitals.

ZZ Series Gas-Fired (Oil-Fired) Power Plant Steam Boiler

For the most demanding steam conditions, the ZZ series represents the high-capacity end of the types of water tube boiler available from ZOZEN. The ZZ series covers a capacity of 20–130 t/h with pressures from 3.82 to 5.4 MPa and steam temperatures of 450°C or 485°C. Designed for continuous high-load operation in thermal power stations and large industrial plants, the ZZ series achieves thermal efficiency above 98% with NOx emissions ≤30 mg/Nm³.

Biomass Fired Water Tube Boilers

SZL Series Biomass-Fired Steam Boiler

The SZL series adopts a double-drum longitudinal layout with a chain grate firing system. With a capacity of 6–35 t/h and pressures from 1 to 2.5 MPa, this boiler is equipped with independent air chambers that ensure even air distribution across the grate, promoting complete combustion of various biomass fuels including wood chips, palm shells, and rice husks. Thermal efficiency exceeds 86%, with automated fuel feeding and ash removal reducing manual operation. The SZL series is widely applied in heating, textile, and brewing industries.

DZL Series Biomass-Fired Horizontal Type Steam Boiler

The DZL series horizontal type is a third-generation biomass boiler featuring a three-drum water tube structure with an assembly design. Offering a capacity of 10–40 t/h and pressures of 1.25, 1.6, or 2.5 MPa, this model incorporates a tall furnace design ranging from 1 to 3 meters to accommodate the combustion of unshaped biomass fuels. An ash-blowing device on the tail convection surface allows ash removal without shutdown. Thermal efficiency exceeds 88%, making the DZL horizontal type well suited for heating, chemical, food, and pharmaceutical applications.

Coal Fired Water Tube Boilers

SZL Series Coal-Fired Steam Boiler

Sharing the same double-drum chain grate architecture as its biomass counterpart, the coal-fired SZL series covers 6–35 t/h with pressures of 1–2.5 MPa. Front and rear arch engineering promotes ignition and flame stability, while densely arranged water-cooled walls provide a large radiation heating area. Thermal efficiency exceeds 81%, and the system supports automated coal feeding, ash removal, and slag discharge for reduced labor requirements.

DHL Series Coal-Fired Steam Boiler

The DHL series adopts a corner tube structure, a design that distinguishes it from other types of water tube boiler in ZOZEN’s portfolio, which eliminates the traditional drum support frame and reduces steel consumption. Covering 20–75 t/h with pressures from 1.25 to 5.4 MPa, the DHL series is engineered for large-scale industrial steam supply and cogeneration applications, offering both high capacity and structural efficiency.

Part 3: Real-World Cases

Case 1: A chemical waste resource utilization facility required stable, high-efficiency steam for its treatment processes. ZOZEN supplied an SZS series steam boiler rated at 25 t/h and 1.25 MPa with a steam temperature of 194°C. The D-type water tube structure and condensing economizer enabled thermal efficiency above 98%, while the low-nitrogen burner system kept NOx emissions within regulatory limits. The boiler has been operating reliably under varying load conditions since commissioning.

Case 2: A food processing company in Xinjiang needed high-capacity steam for tomato washing, sorting, pulping, evaporation, and pasteurization. ZOZEN delivered an SZS series steam boiler producing 35 t/h of steam at 1.6 MPa and 204°C, paired with a WNS series auxiliary unit. The SZS series water tube design ensured rapid steam response during peak production periods, demonstrating why this configuration remains one of the most popular types of water tube boiler for large-scale food processing, and the intelligent control system maintained precise temperature regulation throughout the processing line.

Part 4: Selecting the Right Water Tube Boiler

Choosing among the various types of water tube boiler requires careful evaluation of several factors. The diversity of types of water tube boiler available today means that industrial users can find a configuration precisely matched to their operational profile. Capacity should be matched to actual peak steam demand without excessive oversizing, which leads to low partial-load efficiency. Fuel type determines the combustion system—gas and oil boilers use pressurized burners with condensing recovery, while biomass and coal boilers rely on grate systems sized for specific fuel characteristics. Operating pressure and temperature must align with process requirements, as higher parameters demand more robust tube materials and thicker wall construction. Site conditions including available footprint, emission regulations, and fuel logistics also influence the final selection.

In summary, ZOZEN remains committed to advancing every type of water tube boiler it manufactures, ensuring that each series adapts to changing market needs. With 38 years of manufacturing experience, a 150,000-square-meter production base, ASME and CE certifications, and over 15,000 completed projects in more than 100 countries, ZOZEN offers comprehensive end-to-end support including system design, engineering, commissioning, operator training, and ongoing lifecycle maintenance.
